At the Maori welcome to two returned soldiers at the Three Stars to-night both tho Maori soldiers to be honoured will give speeches detailing to some extent their experiences in the fighting line; they will also state their opinions of the fighting from evidence as it appeared to them.
Twenty-fivo wliares, stranded at Bayley's on the West Coast, which were being cut up and boiled down for oil, were swept out to sea by a very high tide last evening, together with all the oil-boiling apparatus. One whale was washed back and deposited a quarter of a mile up the beach.

That the sending of future reinforcements is to be accelerated is shown by the fact that the Dunedin group commander has been requested to call upon /soldiers of the 41st draft to be ready to go into camp during the week commencing April 30, and men of the 42nd draft during the week commencing May 21 This means that the 41st will come forward four weeks earlier than was originally intended, and the 42nd five weeks earlier.
Even the rat is assisting in the prefeent war. This pest is described by an English paper as the worst of all profiteers, owing to its ravages of grain /supplies. In .Frande, however, rat skins have been turned to account for many purposes after having been fanned. The leather is reported to be very soft, and flexible, and the fur, when the skins are properly preserved is stated to resemble musquash, added to which it lasts better than moleskins. One rat exterminator is stated to have killed over six million rats last y»ar.
A posse of military police, an armed guard with fixed bayonets, drawn round a carriage with /shaded windows and curiosity soon drew a crowd to investigate the matter. It was not a draft of German prisoners, as surmised (says the Palmerston Times) but a draft of /soldiers undergoing detention sentences on their way to Wanganui gaol, which has recently been converted into a military prison for this class of offender. "One dose of it will be Sufficient,'' remarked a military official, who recently inspected the place of detention.
