The canning factories at Cromwell and Alexandra handle about 10,000 each daily and the freezer at Alexendra is said to be getting close on 15,000 daily. Some of the trappers are earning £2 per day.

Master Gordon McCombie, of Eaukura, at the Ohakune Caledonian Sports on Monday, won a silver medal for the best dressed laddie, also Mr, Kilgour's special prize of £1 10s for dancing. He generously donated the latter prize of 30s to the Fire Belief Fund.

There has been a serious shortage of chaff in Auckland during,the summer (reports the Herald) and prices have risen to an abnormal figure, last week's quotations for chaff ranging from £ll to £l2 a ton. Local merchants state that the high prices for chaff are due to scarcity of supplies, the usual shipments from the South not having come to hand.

In urging the appointment of men of experience to staff positions at the sitting of the Defence Expenditure Commission in Palmerston on Thursday. Captain Hudson said of Colonel Adams Commandant of the Featherston Camp, that he was a man of no military or administrative experience. His sole military experience had been in the Territorial Force, H. Battery, Nelson. Colonel Adams would be Che first admit it. Major Newcombc, the adjutant, was an amiable, benevolent gentleman, whose only military experience had been in driving a motor-car in the Motor Eeservo in Auckland. Such appointments as these meant disaster.
