LIVE STOCK IN GERMANY.

There is a strong movement in Germany for a substantial reduction of live stock. Before the war the imports of grain, bran, cake, seeds, and other fodder stuffs came to over 9,000000 tons annually. The stoppage of this colossal supply ought, it is said, to have been met by a systematic diminution of live stock. This, however, was not properly appreciated, and flour and potatoes were diverted from human consumption to keep the live stock going. There is a strong case for reversing this, the more so as it is argued further, tnat it is better to have fewer live stock sufficiently well fed than a great many which are very little good for "foofi, and in the case of cows, which can provide very little milk. It looks a s if there would presently be a substantial increase in the meat ration, whatever may be the .position in" the more distant future. But when one comes to work out nine million tons into shiploads, one' realises the seriousness of the problem.
