VALEDICTORY.
A pleasant little function took place on Monday night, in the Railway Social Hall to bid farewell to Mr. Ninnes, family and staff, Mr, Ninnes having disposed of the Railway Refreshment Rooms to Mr. Dyer. As possession was given up on Saturday, and it was found Mr Ninnes leaves Taihape for South on Wednesday, there was not much time to arrange a gathering but a goodly number of local railway men and their lady friends foregathered.
On behalf of the subscribers, railway members of the several branches from Auckland, to Wellington, Mr. Mercer asked Mr. Ninnes’s acceptance of some valuable and useful presents for himself, wdfe, tw r o little toys and lady attendants, the Misses Day and Beattie, as a token of regard and esteem, together with hearty and sincere wishes for their future welfare.
Several speakers voiced their appreciation of Mr. Ninnes’s cheery personality and kindness of heart to railwaymon and of his practical patriotism to soldiers passing up and down the line. It w T as mentioned that during his tenancy of the Rooms there had been no complaints from the travelling public; but rather commendation of the service and appreciation greatly to the credit of Mr. Ninnes and his assistants.
In response, Mr Ninnes heartily thanked the givers for their gifts, which rvould always remind his good wife and himself of their pleasant asaocation with the railwayman of Taihape whom he said had not infrequently came to his assistance at busy times and whose kindness would never
be forgotten. On behalf of Misses Day and Beattie he was pleased at the appreciation shown them, as he had been more than satisfied with their duty to him. Ho would like to mention that
at all times railwayman Had treated his attendants with proper respect and
courtesy, to the high credit of all concered. Hearty cheers -were given for Mr. and Mrs, Ninnes and his lady asistants, and after supper was handed round a very pleasant and informal Lutle gathering terminated about midnight.
