The conditions which were experienced in Masterton, as the result of the fires in the King Country, provided the sensation-mongers with plenty of material, and the moset absurd rumours were circulated, causing much an*iety. One report was that Auckland had been blown up as the result of an eruption; another was that Ngauruhoe, by its' eruption, had destroyed Taihape ,and other towns in the vicinity, uhile still another was that Ngauruhoe, as the result of a gigantic eruption, had blown an area of 50 to 100 miles square skywards.
