PRICES OF TIMBER.
Considerable fear has been felt in the fire devastated areas that, owing to the almost clean sweep of sawmills other millers would increase the
price of timber and so considerably hamper the re-erection of dwellings; and'buildings on farm’s where the destruction was very widespread. R. W. Smith, M.P., was’ communicated with, and, as a result, he waited bn Mr. M. M. Carpenter, manager of the Rangitikei Co-operative Sawmillers’ Association, to whom he explained the uneasiness that was being felt. Mr. Carpenter asked Mr. Smith to assure the unfortunate settlers that he was quite sure that .local sawmillers-could not do such a mean thing as to unnecessarily increase the losses settlers had already been subjected to bv the fire. He said Mr. Smith could tell the settlers that local mills would not increase timber prices.
