LOCAL AND GENERAL.
There are at present 35,000 bales of wool and 4000 bales of hemp in the Wellington , Harbour Board's stores. Other produce held in store by the Board includes 108,000 crates of cheese, worth. £7 a crate.
The Taihape Red Cross Shop will be occupied by Bennett's Siding ladies on next Saturday, and it is earnestly hoped that Taihape will • accord them a great welcome in promptly buying them out. It will require some money as the stocks of meat, produce, cakes and other commodities are on the big side. ■■■•*-
During the past few days the attendants at the Taihape Telephone Exchange and Bureau have had a very strenuous time. Speaking for ourselves, we tender them our thanks for their unfailing courtesy and promptitude in meeting our, at time, somewhat exacting demands. They rose to the occasion splendidly.
"We look upon hotelkeepers not only as non-essential, but as more or less of an evil," remarked Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., chairman of the Military Service Board at Christchurch, when the question of a publican probably applying for time to arrange •his business before going into camp was under discussion.
An interesting statement was made by Sir Joseph Ward during the course of his address in Palmerston the other evening, when he stated that, scientists were of opinion that within a few years a new propelling power for ships, trains, and motors would be brought into use. Numbers of scientists were now engaged in the solving of the problem, and were confident of meeting with complete success.
