The "Times," In a leading article commenting on Sir Douglas Haig's Cambrai despatch, says that nothing can be gained from further criticism. It seems clear that some troops were less ready to sustain sudden shocks than their leaders expected. Morale failed in certain sectors, and defects existed in the defensive preparations. The German design to capture and destroy the whole of the forces in the Cambrai salient was baffled, but the counter-attacks notoriously produced complete confusion at one point, and gave us a serious lesson, which has been taken to heart. As a result the defensive preparations are now more thorough than ever.
