A MANUFACTURED SENSATION
• : One day last month a very large slip—some three" thousand tons—came down on the Kawhatau Road, in the Kiwitea country. It was certainly a big slip, even for this country, but the story of it grew and grew, like the little peach, until by the time the report of it had reached the city press it had accomplished the amazing feat of damning up the Rangitikei river and almost overwhelming a motor lorry which had been passing along the road. The facts are that the slip covered the road and some papa fell down the cliff into the river, but made no difference whatever to the flow of the stream; and, as for the motor-lorry, that vehicle had passed by an hour before the slip came down. The county roadmen had been watching the slip for a week, and taking all possible precautions against accident. Settlers are indignant .'at the exaggerated press reports (which, it may be explained, did not 'appear in the "Star"), which gave a wrong impresion of the district. —Feilding SfaT.
