TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held last night, t'rosoat: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. L. Arrowsmith, Esq.), and Crs. Wrightson Champion, Turnbull, Keid and Dashwood. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Joblin.
The General Secretary of the Y M. C.A., wrote asking for a refund of Town Hall charges on the entertainment of the Maori entertainers, which had been given for a patriotic object. —Resolved to refund all but the actual expenses.
The Town Clerk, Auckland City Council, sent a circular emphasising the vital necessity to New Zealand that the German part of Samoa which had been captured by the British be retained in British hands after the war.
The Mayor said it was quite evident that Germany was not a desirable neighbour, and it would not be wise to let her 'have Samoa as a jumping off place for future aggression. It was decided to support the action outlined by the Auckland City Council
Cr, S. Reid’s resignation as chairman of the Works Committee was received and accepted with regret. Or. Turnbull .was apopduted to the Works Committee vacancy. A letter was received from the office of the Minister of Finance asking for the Council’s co-operation in raising the War Loan that will be placed be- 1 fore the public next week.
It was decided that the Council use its best endeavours to ensure the success of the loan ,
The Fire Brigade wrote asking that certain sanitary matters at the Fire Station bo attended. The foreman was instructed to make the necessary repairs. ,Mr. A. C. Nicholl’s application for nermissoin to show pictures on Good Friday was granted. The report of the Works’ Committee was read and adopted as follows: Having authorised the Foreman of Warks to erect one of the old troughs taken from Main Street at the Public Pound_ That the balance of 60 sheets of second-hand roofing iron removed from the old stables, and not required at present for any other purpose, be taken into stock. That the question of procuring the use of the Road grader, be held over until further information as to the cost of 'hiring same is available. Have no recommon-' dation to make in 'connection with the Manawatu County Council’s resolution re special trains to race meetings and motor car traffic..
The Electric Light and Water works Committee reported as follows:
That the Technical School Committee be granted an electric light supply subject to it undertaking to pay the cost •of installation, and for all current consumed at the rate of 1/3 per unit, but subject to a discount of 33 1-3 per cent if paid by due date. That Mr. P. E_ Wakeman bo informed that the Committee has gone carefully into the .matter of the amount charged him for extraordinary water supply for period ending 31st January last and is of the opinion the account is correct, and has directed the Engineer to write explaining the results of his tests and observations. That the Taihapc Trademen's Association be informed that provision has been made whereby the high pressure water supply can be turned on at the pound within a minute of an alarm of fire being .received and the Brigade has been notifed and instructed in the matter. That, subject to the approval of the Finance Committee a refund of £1 13s, be made to each subscriber to the Kaka Eoad agreement for the extension of Electric Lighting system to Kaka Eoad. That the electric light pole at the corner of Hautapu and Moa Streets be shifted to a position, nearer the footpath on Hautapu Street That the Electrical Engineer has arranged with Mr. Ninnis of the Eail-
way Befreshment Booms to pay for all electric current passing through the meter at present on his premises, at current rates and as the meter is a sub to the railway supply the Eailway Department be given credit each month for the current consumed in the Booms.—Adopted,
The Finance Committee ’s report was read as follows: That the recommendation of the Electric' Light and Water Committee, with regard to a refund of a proportion of the amount deposited by each party to the Kaka Boad Electric Light Extension agreement be approved of and the amount passed for payment (i.e., a total of £3l 45.) That the Council *s resolution re control and payment of Mr. Duncan the nightwatchman takes effect from Ist April next. It has been found 'impossible to find a .purchaser for the fire engine. Having instructed the Town Clerk to report as soon as convenient on the question of estimates and proposed rates -for next year. < •:
In moving the adoption of the Finance Committee’s Bcport, the Mayor pointed out how much .more satisfac-
tory the end of this financial year was than the same period last year. The outstanding rates this year were M, an eminently satisfactory petition. The Mayor brought up the question of naming the streets of the Borough, B'efore referring the matter back to the Committee he thought it desirable they should arrive at some definite method of nomenclature. He agreed that some of the Maori names of birds were difficult to pronounce, but there were others that could be substitutod_ Cr.Wrightson moved that the question of naming the streets bo referred back to the committee, giving them an absolutely free hand in the matter. This course was adopted, the Mayor remarking that they should assuredly go in for birds ’ names. It was decided to close the Borough office during the Easter holidays from Thursday to the following Tuesday. ' The Council had a somewhat lengthy discussion on a matter brought up by Cr. Reid relative to filling tanks from the water supply and interference with pipe valves, which is reported in another column.
The Council then adjourned tilt April 19th.
