What premies to be one of the finest items on Monday’s sports programme is the tug-of-war. Up to the present seven teams have notified their intention of competing, and taking a line from what we have seen of this recreation at local sports gatherings in the past, competition should be of the keenest. Mr. Jim Pine’s team, with its great reputation, is at present ruling favourite, but if reports from Mataroa and the Taihape firemen can be relied upon, the natives will have to consider themselves extremely fortunate if they are not included in the “also rans.” Good reports have also been received concerning the doings of the Licensed Victuallers, with big “Bill” as anchor, and the “Top-weights,” captained by Albert Warren. Private information elicits the fact that the “Tradesmen’s” team, under the capable guidance of Stan. Peyton, is quite sanguine of “bringing home the bacon.”
