A PATRIOTIC DECLARATION

* CHRISTCHURCH, March 14

The first Dominion conference of

’.the ■; Victoria League opened this morning,, .-presided over by Mr. W. J. Napier, -of Auckland. The Mayor of ■Christchurch extended a welcome' to thei pelegates. Mr. Napier, in Tre--1 the welcome, outlined I'fthat the Victoria League stood for, and concluded as follows: “This Conference will, with God’s help, result in teaching us better to carry on, for carry on we must, and will until freedom for all, the weak as well as the strong, is secure. There are no timid counsels in the Victoria League. '"We neither give ear to aristocratic backsliders of the Lansdown type nor to the ill-informed pacificist of the street corner. Steadily, persistently, unfalteringly, until our ends are achieved and the Empire is made safe, we shall one and all unitedly and with the whole of our strength carry on.” The Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool were elected patrons of all branches of the League in New Zealand. _ The president remarked that he did not know exactly what the monetary value of the League’s work was, but he would say that in money and material it should not be far short of £150,000.
