The Taihape Daily Times. AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 1918. GERMANY’S LAST HOPE.

(With which is incorporated The Tai hapo Post and Wahr.arino News).

many is attaching greater importance to, and is depending more upon, tire success of campaigns of corruption for %inniug the war than upon her strength of anms.j Front experience , \ye know that so little of what Gcr- . many permits to bo said to the world is true, her powers of Speech and communication being used more to deceive than to inform. At this moment the Central Powers have to some extent overcome the blockade that has for so long effectually prevented, food from reaching their people. The collapse and enslavement of Russia, may temporarily help them to food 'bu)c there will i>c very little t raw material obtainable that will enable more rapid prosecution of war and other industries. The statements made by different German newspapers respecting I?he ccononijic situation are as wide apart as the poles. Simultaneously one lot of journals say that after the war the country will be bankrupt, and without a friend among nations, another lot hints at a great financial syndicate being formed of so gigantic and farreachiug character as to give Germany supremacy in the world’s finance. The financial hub of the universe is to be transferred from London to Berlin. Of course the attainment of this does not depend upon fighting, but merely upon cultur. That class of cultur that has laid Russia in the dust and which the Germans have faith in to enslave the Russian people. Germany went forth to rapidly conquer the world with her glorious army, but we know that she is depending more upon lying, scheming, and the' basist of corruption at this stage than upon the products of her munition factories, and it is truly amazing to witness the extent to which she is succeeding. Italy was laid low, Franco is honeycombed with Boloism, which reaches into the very highest places. England is not free/ by any means, of which there is ample evidence. Not long ago British moneyed people were appealed to almost simultaneously for subscriptions for two purposes, one to assist German prisoners in England, the other to assist English prisoners in Germany. The Cadbury Cocoa people gave over two thousand pounds to the Germans and scut a cheque for five pounds for the British, which we feel proud to say, was promptly returned. Amongst those who gave to keep Germans in England in luxury while Britons toiled deep down in German mines with barbaric i.askmas'fcrs over them freely using their rifle butts, were such men as Lord Haldane, 'Rowntrco, and oiers their country had trusted. 1<^ S ° r , CaSeS are mcn tioncd to show hat Germany’s campaign of corruption xs not wanting the right ground and environment in England to attain to some troublesome measure of cess. So serious is it regarded now that the British Government is ar ranging to use the power of the press in combating it. Germany has forosaken the gallantry of the knight for the slimy trail of the serpent Her armies are being used to inerolv hold her enemies back while the process of snakish fascination has rendered her victims ready to be licked and swal-

lowed. No part of the world that has

any connection with-the war is being left unattended as not being of sufficient importance, 'Japan,. Persia, far eastern Russia and all the countries of the Allies, including America, are being comprehensively assailed in the campaign of corruption. There is little doubt about the loudly boasted offensive on the west front being nothing more than the bluff of the corruption campaigners. What concerns us most is to know whether Germany is warranted in putting such belief in the ultimata' complete success of thjis campaign as reflected in her leading newspapers. New German peace terms are being stated; Italy is to be deprived of territory and made a servant of Germany; France is to pay an indemnity of two thousand , million pounds, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are to be enslaved, for, the papers say, if Germany neglects this opportunity she will never get another, According to German newspapers the faith in this corruption campaign is such that the supermen really think their army of crawling snakes have already fascinated both enemies and friends and licked them ready for the swallowing business. They are, however, finding Russia rather large and thorny; they did not see Japan, and Cbind hanging to that coveted appetising morsel,, yet there they arc, the snake is alarmed and irritated; he made another of his fatal blunders, Germany is repeating the Garden of Eden 'story; the Hun satan has been cast out by all nations of the earth, and like the other satan ho seeks to wreck the caster-out by raising doubts in minds of weaklings, and imbeciles and by the use of those with traitorous bent. There is not one indication that the campaign of corruption can succeed, but Germany was forced into it, it was the only way by which there appeared a faint hope of having some say in adjustments at the peace None but weak-minded people, eccentric people, and those Gcrmanically inclined have the faintest belief in Germany being able to withstand the force of arms that will be brought to bear by the Allies during this year. Germany hoped to get food, petrol, other suppling, and even soldiers from Russia but such hopes are doomed. They were based on the Allies refus- 1 ing to allow Japan to enter the war, and wo shall soon be amply informed to how fatally baseless they were. The sane elements in Russia arc already reorganising and combining against anarchic socialism assisted by Germany. These will bo fed with guns, war munitions and all other war equipment by Japan, while Japanese and Chinese soldiers will march with them to victory over Hun treachery. Tho campaign of corruption is being taken in hand by the Allies and there arc undoubted indications that its overthrow is certain.
