WAR OFFICE GENEROSITY.
£95 FOR .9/5. A wheelwright in Essex, having executed a small job for some troops encamped near his workshop, sent in ; his account for the modest sum of 9s 'sd to the military authorities. To his amazement (says the Star) he received in payment a cheque for £95. . He wrote, pointing out that his account was for 9s 5d only, and asking what he should do with the cheque sent to him. In reply he got another cheque for £95. Not knowing what to do, he consulted a solicitor, who advised him to bank the money and let the authorities apply for its return if the errors were discovered, and This the wheelwright has done. On the story being told to the manager of a Surrey dairy, he said he could equal it. He stated that last summer the military authorities commandeered the entire stock of hay on his farm, paying money down for it. A portion only of the" stock was required to be delivered at once, instructions being given that the remainder should be retained" until further orders were received. As nothing further was heard, the farmer wrote to the military authorities, and an officer came down and inspected the hay, and explained where it was to be sent. Some time afterwards the farmer received a cheque for £l7O for the hay which had been left on the farm. He sent the cheque back, with the reminder that the hay been paid for once, but it was returned to him, and it has since been paid Into the bank.
