AEROPLANE TESTS. GREAT NERVE REQUIRED. Testing new aeroplanes is neither a job for the faint-hearted, nor a pleasant amusement for a sunny morning (writes H. Sykes in the "Evening News"). It requires all a man's nerve, and courage, and strength. But this danger makes the joy of it; this risk, the fascination. Every flight with a new machine is a bloodless death struggle between men, the all but human mechanism, and the elements. The number of civilian test pilots in Great Britain to-day, can be counted on the. fingers of both hands. But their company in the past has included such famous names as Hawkes, Hucks, Grahame White, Hamel, Goodden, Noel, Pegoud, Sopwith, and Vedrennes. The actual risk is, if anything, greater than when flying across the lines. The new machine is drawn out to the aerodrome by the mechanics, a graceful product of modern science. Newly finished, the wings and metal parts gleam brightly in the sun; the engine starts off with a roar. But somewhere in that compact body may be hidden a loose wire or a faulty strut; that engine that turns so confidently now, may go off at a moment's notice once the machine is in the air.
