A MARK OF RESPECT. A little story told of the late Shah of Persia springs to the mind as an explanation of unconventional conduct on the part of a certain individual in Wellington on the evening of the recent by-election in that city. The Shah was in London (says an exchange), where many of the Cockneys are given to vulgar doings. One of these, not having the fear of Shahs before his eyes, put his thumb to his nose, and waggled his fingers—this being generally regarded as a sign of contempt. The Shah inquired the meaning of the gesture. The official flunkies around him not wishing to hurt his feelings (even a Shah has his feelings) told him that it was a mark of high respect. But mark the sequel. As the Shah was leaving London by train, and all official flunkeydom was kow-towing on the platform, he “put his thumb unto his nose and spread his fingers out,” just as someone did the crowd of admirers iif'ihont of the “Evening Post” office on Thursday night. Perhaps it was meant as a mark of high respect—and for the sake of the nominal dignity of his office it is as well to give him the benefit of the doubt.
