A man named P. M. Dewar, described as a health specialist, was committed for trial at the Magistrate's Court in Auckland on Tuesday for alleged counselling an illegal operation. A previous charge had been laid a few days previously, but had been dismissed. It was mentioned before the Wellington Military Service Board that the cash trade of a butchery establishment in Wellington had nearly doubled during the war period, Four delivery carts out of ten had been withdrawn owing to shortage of labour, and last month 19,392 persons were served with meat in the shop. They paid cash and carried away their own parcels.

American employees of both sexes have suffered gross insults and violence in the province of Buenos Aires at the hands of police and strikers. Women had all their clothes torn from them and suffered other indignities from the mob. The trouble was caused entirely by professional agitators, who brazenly offer these women immunity for a price, and threaten vengeance otherwise

The case in which a taxi-drive* named Loveridgc was charged with the abduction of a girl under eighteen years of age was concluded on Tuesday, accused being committed for trial at the Supreme Court, with bail £200; himself and two sureties of £IOO each. Evidence was given that accused and the girl stayed in a Palmerston North boardinghouse for eight weeks, accused spending the week-ends there.

As the result of recent arrests of bookmakers, numbers appeared in the Wellington Court on Thursday morning for betting in licensed premises, Henry James Wales was fined •£4O and James Henry Rogers, £2O. Rogers was also fined £lO for laying totalisator odds. John Laidlaw Walling, for keeping a common gaming house, was fined £SO. Arthur Walling, for assisting in conducting the same, was fined £25.

In reply to an inquiry, the Prime Minister stated that the new arrangement by which meat is supplied to any retailers who require it, and at export price, has worked so satisfactorily that it is not now necessary to continue the Government connection with the butchers' business which, for 12 months, has been run in the Government name in Auckland. Since the new arrangement came into operation, the price of meat has been very considerably reduced in Auckland
