GERMAN SOCIALISTS. Writing in the “Edinburgh Review’ ’ for October, Dr. A. Shadwcll, refers to the use the German Government has been making of the socialists of that chantry in an endeavour to promote a German peace. The truth is, he says, that the German socialists share the arrogance and will to domineer Germany. They despise all other military and scientific men. And they have used the internal socialism to spread the German idea. It was a form of ‘peaceful penetration’ quite on a par with the commercial and financial manoeuvres, In its name Germany used the socialists up to the outbreak of war; it has utilised them during the war; and is still making pawns of them in an attempt to secure a German peace. They began working on the neutrals, touring hero and there, holding meetings and conversations, writing Pauline epistles, all in favour of Germany, not of the ‘international proletariate/ No sooner had the original campaign broken down at the Marne than socialist conference began to be held in neutral countries in favour of peace. Dr. Shadwcll predicts that further such attempts to bring about peace will be made.
