A CIGARETTE ROMANCE A packet of cigarettes sent to the front by a young woman living at Hildenborough, near Tunbridge Wells, has led to her marriage to a soldier who received the gift. The young woman wrote her name and address on the packet, which came into the possession of a private of the West Kent Regiment. Letters passed between them and when the soldier came home on leave he made the personal acquaintof the lady of the cigarette. He lost no time in wooing her, and soon afterwards they were married at the village church. Unluckily, however, the village policeman inquired about the bridegroom’s pass, and the soldier had to admit that he had overstayed his leave. Torn from the arms of his weeping bride, he was obliged to spend the night in a police cell, and the next morning he was charged with being an absentee. The magistrate was sympathetic, but, of course, handed him ov cr to an escort. Still he penned on the charge sheet a request that in the special circumstances the erring bridegroom might bo leniently dealt with.
