If there are any doubts about the nature, quality and purpose of the much vaunted cultur of Germany, we would advise all doubting ones to read a German communique that was cabled to this journal yesterday. It causes ono to wonder whether education has any really refining influence upon the human mind, or whether it is merely a coating of white wash obscuring the actual filth beneath; whether it is only a cloaking and not an eradication of all that is brutal and • inhuman in mankind. There is this . extremely circumstantial description pf strikes, riots, tumults and street fighting in London by the cultured German authorities which never had the faintest state of being. If this is a demonstration of what German cultur aims at the world has good cause to cry for salvation from anything however slightly related to it. Here we have a cabled tissue of the most barefaced lies, emanating from a nation and class which claims to be the most highly educated in the world. Carlyle says that "lies wait and cry for extraction, "may the time for these hideous German lies not have to wait and cry for long. This latest exhibition of cultur gives some insight into and a better understanding of the true position and attitude of the German it discloses 'beyond question that the German people arc the victims of an organised deception which hitherto surpassed belief, and there are not wanting signs that these lies of cultur are on the verge of extermination and extinction. This cabled communique from the land of cultur states 'that "hardly a day passes in Britain without crowds i?i towns coming into conflict with the police. A riot typical of affairs occurred in London last month; crowds fought and worsted the police, putting them to flight. Scottish troops were ordered to fire on the rioters in Oxford Street. They refused and eighty Scotchmen were arrested. The windows in Selfridge's Emporium were smashed, and in the evening similar tumults took place in Threadneedlo Street." It would seem :that cultur and criminality have evoluted side by side in Germany. The old idea that, "The cause of education is the cause of liberty," has exploded, German cultur has shattered the idea that education gives a nobler estimate of high vocation. Is not this boasted cultur largely an elevation of the grossest brutal proclivities, all that education should aim at subordinating and suppressing; a cultur under which the consummation of a people's destiny may perhaps be a question of time, but under which it entirely ceases to be one of certainity. Carlyle said, i" Where thou findest a lie that is oppressing thee, extinguish it." to death by lies. What can any superstructure be, and how long can it hold itself aloft, based upon nothing but the most hitleous deception?- German military leaders must indeed be conscious of the utter rottenness of their case when they sink to such depths of lying for filth wherewith to bolster it up. War results from these secretly organised campaigns of ly m g> comprehensively described as diplomacy, and through them the blood of the peoples of the world is made to run freely that some elevated inhuman brute or brutes may gratify unnatural passions, In his political economy Whately says we are undoubtedly more civilised than the ancients, and, he said, I hope and trust that posterity five centuries hence will look on us as semibarbarians. '' If Whatcby had written to-day ho would have revised that sentence, for he would have had conclusive demonstration that the ancient barbarians had no compeer o± the barbarian of the present times. This war was bonr or lies, nursed and nurtured by deceit; the world was hushed to an unconsciousness of the coming catastrophe by a secret campaign of deception during a series of years that reached wherever man lived, and yet its instigators have miserably failed. At about the end of their world-wide lying tether they are lying to each other; Germany has now two great factions, the deceived and the deceiving the rest of the world has had deception rudely shaken away and they now await the opening of the eyes of their deceived enemies. Calmly and dispassionately we try to think of a crime that German cultur has not been guilty of and we fail to find even one. Lying often revels in temporary success, but there are indeed few lies that do not bring their own retribution. That arm of the liar that raises a sword to kill and destroy must be made to rebuild and compensate, or suffer extinction. The Allies will compel the German liar to reinstate and compensate as far as possible the destruction and murder he has wrought, • and then the mass of his German victims will commit him .to extinction, and upon his lying bones a better and truer Germany will arise.
