GENERAL CABLES

KAISER'S PROUD .HUMILITY

GOD'S GREAT DEEDS.

A BIRTHDAY ORATION.

AMSTERDAM, Jan. 28

In acknowledging the Court preacher's birthday greetings, the Kaiser telegraphed his deep thankfulness. "I commemorate to-day/' he said, "God's great deeds for the German people. He has given historical successes to our colours and removed many sorrows, and kept the Fatherland through distress and privations. I hope our Church will help me after we have victoriously finished the war in peaceful competitions with other professions to heal wounds, conciliate controversies and unite and strengthen our people in enthusiastic and unselfish devotion to the Fatherland. My special sympathy is with the great tasks set equally before the Church and State in the reconstruction of family life and the education of a God-fearing and healthy young generation worthy of their fa'thers.''

STOP SQUABBLING-.

"TIMES" TO AUSTRALIA

LONDON, January 17

A leader in the ''Times" comments strongly on Australia's recent political squabbles. It says:

"It becomes increasingly fljfficult to discern how many semblance of the principile of patriotism is inspiring the perennial querulousness of Commonwealth politics Australian soldiers are displaying the highest qualities. They fight and die or are wounded, and the reinforcements they expect begin to show signs of falling. The Australian people exercised their undoubted right regarding conscription and there is no need to say more on that question: but if Australia were nearer the battlefields larger issues might displace the political squabbles and the endless personal recriminations,. A' review of the situation indicates that Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson acted correctly in avoiding an election which would be unlikely to alter the May verdict. Australia 's patriotism is deep and abiding and may yet find unforeseen ways of asserting" itself.''

GERMANY AND BELGIUM

AMSTERDAM, Jan 28

The "Frankfurter Zeitung" states that Count Hertling will shortly make an additional statement with a positive declaration regarding Belgium
