WESTERN FRONT.
A TRENCHANT.CRITIC.
FAILURE TO ATTAIN HIS
OBJECTIVES,
LONDON, January 24,
A feature of the debate on the Cambrai reverse was Mr, Kennedy Jones’ remarkable speech. He startled the House by declaring that .everyone knew there was the gravest dissatisfaction with the Commander-in-Chief after the Somme campaign of 1916, He did not attain his objectives, and sacrificed more men than would have been necessary to obtain success. General Haig’s services were retained at the beginning of 1917 because Cabinet was afraid his removal would lead to a great newspaper opposition. General Haig promised that if ho were left alone and given the men he could guarantee certain results by October, 1917. He had not obtained them.
AN AMERICAN SUGGESTION,
NEW YORK, January 24,
The military authorities suggest that the AUies may anticipate tfhe German drive on the West front by a great Allied offensive.
