Britain's Food Problem
FOOD DISTRIBUTION.
MUCH PUBLIC DISCONTENT.
LONDON, January IS.
The food distriution is giving rise to much public discontent, particuarly in Manchester, where 100.000 engineers decided to stop work on Saturday week and march to the Town Hall to protest against the unequal distribution. There have been minor disorders in London, women in the margarine queues demanding supplies. Everything points to the immediate necessity of compulsory rationing.
STATEMENT BY FOOD CONTROLLER.
Received 9.25. LONDON, January 19
Lord Rhondda, speaking at the Aldwych Club, said that wit";out wishing to alarm the public, we had now reached the state that Germany reached two years ago. Now her position was perilous. He deprecated attempts to set class against class but the rich and middle classes seconded snore generally to economy appeals than the wage earners. There was no evidence that farmers were deliberately withholding supplies. He concluded: There
is no prospect of a meat famine such as affects Germany, but we might have to economise our meat for a few
months.
