TAXIS AND THEIR CHARGES.
At the meeting of the Borough
Council last night, the Special Committee appointed to go into the ques- * tion of the charges for licensed vehlj cles plying for hire in the borough -was laid before the Council as follows: —
Your Committee reports having gone carefully into the matter and recommends: “That under the power vested in it by by-law 271, the Council fixes the fares chargeable for the hire of licensed vehicles as follows: —For the use of the whole vehicle up to
and including four persons, and not
per head for each person riding therein within the hereinafter defined ars£s 2s (two shillings). All other parts of the borough, two shillings and sixpence. For all extra passengers over and above the number of four, one shilling (Is) per head extra. “Area for two-shilling fares, above-
mentioned. —Starting at the bridge across the Otaihape Stream, thence

Wilson’s corner, thence across . railway over-head bridge and along the unnamed street on the western side of the railway yards to Kaka Road, thence along Kaka Road to what is known-as Luke Street,
thence down Luke Street to the Otai- - hape - Stream, thence along the Otaihape Stream road to th starting point. “Owing to the streets of the borough not having been officially named and in some cases not named at
all, your Committee experienced some difficulty in describing the foregoing area. Difficulties have also arisen on , other occasions; we would therefore suggest to the Council the advisability of having all the streets in the borough named, under the power vested in it by ‘The Municipal Corporations 1908.’ ”
The Mayor said the Committee had found the question a very difficult one to deal with The report practically applied to taxis, as other passenger conveyances were altogether negligible. The area had been hard to fix, and the Committee had en-
deavoured to make it one -which, did , not entail the, negotiating of any hill.
'After some discussion the Council
decided that from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the usual charge should be made; from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., charge and a-half; from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., by arrangement; and from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. charge and a-half. The charges are to come into force on February Ist, and the scale of charges is to be affixed in a conspicuous place in every vehicle.
