IRISH AFFAIRS.
A SETTLEMENT WITHIN SIGHT.
LONDON, January 14.
The "Daily Chronicle" publishes a long article from Dublin emphasising the fact that these are critical days for the Convention. It urges the necessity for a settlement on the basis of autonomy within the Empire. It says: "It is now only a matter of safeguards for Ulster, which can be solved if given in goodwill and good faith among the negotiators. The leading Unionists already say that if they could guarantee us that the Irish Parliament would be a body like the Convention, we would have no hesitation in accepting."
Other newspapers publish similar articles, suggesting that the negotiations have reached an important stage, and pleading that the utmost effort should bo made to avoid a breadd.own. The delegates were not asked to find a solution which would be acceptable to all Irishmen.
