AMUSEMENTS

KING'S THEATRE.

One of the most sensational successes of screen stardom, Peggy Hyland, is seen in "Babette" the Greater Vitagraph drama. The story is really "different." Its central incident is the marriage of a beautiful French girl to a handsome stranger whom .sue believes to be a great artist. He really is an artist by instinct but by choice : he is one of the cleverest thieves in all France. He makes a resolute stand after his marriage and does not succomb to the easier way until his Babette falls ill. Then he gets the money in t iO old wily, and very soon the police are on his track. His real trouble is

to keep the truth from his innocent wife, and this he manages to do A

dramatic turn of fate comes to his aid and the end of the story is full of

surprise. "He stole for her," and this was after numberless resolutions to

go straight. Yet his sin was committed because of the depth of his love. The result of this moral tangle is worked out with dramatic skill in "Babette" starring Peggy Hyland. The Latin Quarter of Paris has longbeen the home of the wayward love affairs of the artist and the student, and one of its prettiest tales of passion is unfolded in "Babette." A 2000 feet comedy, Gaumont Graphic, Scenic, etc., supports the above.

EVERYBODY'S

"'A Tortured Heart" a William Fox production showing at Everybody's tomorrow (Tuesday), tells a powerful talc of the evils of the village gossip and a charming story of American Southern life. Virginia Pearson, the ! star, already known to patrons of William Fox master films has just the , role which, fits her beauty and dramatic acting. For the tale unfolded in "A Tortured Heart" is fined with all the wholesomencss of the Southland and the beauty of Dixie all of which is impersonated in Miss Pearson,' whom a noted artist has termed "the' most perfect American type of womanhood" The Rev. Joseph Lorimore (Stephen Grattan), village pastor, finds a foundling on the steps of his church, and the townspeople scorn his interest in the child, who grows up to be a charming young woman, a part taken by Marian Swayne. In the rectory par-, lor the spinisters of the little town assemble to sec the baby. About the only one who is interested in the pretty child is Lucille Darrell (Miss Pearson), a wealthy unmarried woman of the community. From this point the story unfolds its tale of the evils of of gossip, uncharitablcncss and all that' these unwholesome qualities bring in "heart torture." Stuart Holmes in his villainous part as Leon Muller, does his best to bring suffering to the "characters and his power of evil seems at first greater than the kindly parson's power for good. The supporting pictures which in-

i chide a Fox comedy are exceptionally good.
