GENERAL CABLES

THE KAISER AND POLAND. AMSTERDAM, January 9 The Kaiser, replying to Prince Lubomirski, spokesman for the Polish Regency Council, said he had learned ■with lively satisfaction that the actions of himself and his ally wore regarded as the realisation of the Polish nation’s long-cherished wishes. FINLAND'S FUTURE. COPENHAGEN, January 9. A Finnish delegation has left for England in order to influence Britain to acknowledge the republic. Later they will visit France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. GERMANS LOSE DYE MONOPOLY. SECURED BY BRITISH MANUFACTURERS. LONDON, January 9. The “Daily Mail” says that after two years persistent effort a group of British textile workers, headed by John Leyland and Richard Baldry, with the assistance of the Foreign Office, obtained in Switzerland 257 secret recipes from the Dadlsch dye monopoly. They spent thousands sterling and took great risks during the long-drawn negotiations with a Swiss chemist who had possession of the recipes. German agents everywhere dogged them, stealing their luggage, and drugging and assaulting them. Making laboratory tests was dangterous. When the recipes and samples were obtained, the Foreign Office forwarded them to England with the utmost secrecy. They were lodged in a bank’s strong-room. Manufacturing at Bradford and Manchester answered all tests, producing the whole range of dyes, hitherto exclusively German.
