HOMES FOR SOLDIERS. SCHEME UNDER CONSIDERAION. WELLINGTON, Jan 6. In reply to an inquiry from the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association as to the opportunities offered to returned men to acquire homes of their own, the Prime Minister has written stating that land may be acquired, to provide suitable sites for residences and houses may be erected thereon, and disposed of to discharged soldiers on very favourable terms, similar to those provided in regard to workers’ dwellings. The Prime Minister intimated that thehTecessary conditions were under consideration, and it was expected that the scheme could be put into operation shortly_ PAYMENT OF INCOME-TAX. DUE DATE JANUARY 28. The due date fixed by Order-in-Council for the payment of both ordinary and special war fax is January 29 ,and the last <Tay of the payment is February 18. Inquiries made to-day show that the Tax Department will probably be late in getitng out a good many of the demands, but in such cases the Crown will fix a new date for which power is gUen under the Act. Last year the tax was payable in two sums oh different dates, but this led to a misunderstanding on the part of many taxpapers and it. been resolved, therefore, this year to make the tax "payable on one day as has hitherto been the case.
