THE SAVAGE GERMANS.
According to a book which Eas been published in Switzerland by Dr. Nicolai, formerly physician to the German Imperial family, entitled "The Biology of War," the Germans, if they had the opportunity would deal worse than sudden death to their enemies. He says he was asked by one of the ablest of German military men whether it was possible to drop bombs coritainung cholera germs or pjpgue bacilli behind the enemy lines. When Dr. Mcolai objected that such a course was scarcely humane the reiily with a contemptuous gesture, was to the effect that they had nothing to do with humanity in his war, and that Germany was justified in doing anything. The author of the book was also consulted by a German staff doctor as to whether he could devise any plan by which Russians could be inoculated with living bacteria, as with "such a herd anything was legitimate." Dr. Nicolai's comment is that "Hate seems to have become a religion for such demoralised individuals;.'' It is for such disclosures as these that Dr. Nicolai's property has been confiscated, and he himself confined in a German fortress for five months.
