SUPPLIES OF OILS.
BIG SHIPMENTS ARRANGED FOR, WELLINGTON. January 7. In September last it-was found desirable to take a census of the stocks of kerosene, benzine, petrol, and other case oils available for consumption in the Dominion. Information which was collected by the Government Statistician -with the assistance of the Post and Telegraph Department indicated that there was a possibility of an acute shortage of such oils. The Prime Minister therefore placed himself in communication, by telegraph, with the Imperial authorities, through the High Commissioner in London, and as an outcome arrangements have been completed for two steamers to lift a supply from the United States estimated at from 60,000 to 70,000 cases. A further 50,000 eases arc available at a United States port for exportation to New Zealand. It is hoped that the necessary arrangements to provide shipping space will be completed at an early date. Through the action taken by the New Zealand Government a special rate of freight has been fixed on the understanding that consumers of the oil shall receive all the benefits arising therefrom.
