THE RAID ON MANNHEIM
IMMENSE HAVOC WROUGHT. Received 10.55. BERNE, Jan 7. Fifty aged wealthy Germans, with their families have arrived at Basle, homeless, as the result of a reprisal air raid on Mannheim, which created immense havoc. The populace were terrified. Refugees state the Germans broug&t Allied officer prisoners into an enclosure near the main station at Mannheim, hoping to dissuade the British from further raids. (Mannheim is a large town in Ba : den- on the river Rhine, with a population of 167,000 people. It has an extensive trade, and is a great manufacturning centre.)
