Seyen arrests were- made in Auckland on Friday afternoon of men charged with street ■ betting. Those on whom the arrest warrants ~were executed are: Frederick James Kernott, Joseph Rees, Henry Newton, John Weston, William Lane, John Martin, and Edward George Lowe.They were brought before Mr Bart. Kent, J.P., at the Police Court, and remanded on bail till next Thursday.
The following paragraph appearing in the "Daily Mirror" shows that prisoners of war escape in other places besides New Zealand: "Lieut. Otto Thelen made his fourth escape from internment camps recently, but was recaptured. With twenty-one other Hun officers, including Captain von Muller (late commander of the Emden) —a pioneer of modern piracy—he disappeared through a tunnel at Keyworth, near the famous Donnington Hall. Of the twenty-three German officers who escaped, twelve have been re-captured. The German prisoners who escaped from Hanttworth Camp seven weeks ago are still a* large. This means that twelve of the escaped prisoners have been caught j and eleven officer prisoners are still at large, and have been lost for seven , weeks." I
