The striking feature of the German Christmas is the acute misery of the people. 111-clad women and children are openly begging for food in the snow-covered streets. Hunger riots occurred in many towns, the most serious at Cologne. Fashionable Berlin restaurants are charging ten pounds sterling for a dinner.
