AMERICAN LEAVE BONUSES. . The American Army in France has adopted a novel system of encouraging healthy competition among its various units. Combined exercises in digging trenches, shooting, bom"throwing, and bayonet fighting are taking place on the American front, and it is announced that the companies which show the best results of the intensive training they are undergoing will be rewarded with a week's leave in Paris and new uniforms. HUN DESERTER'S CRIME. The Amsterdam "Telegraaf" reports from Lindlioven (Southern Holland) that two German deserters forced an entrance into the house of a widow named Joosten, living at Mlerlo. They tied the woman to a chair and ill-treated her, and stran- ! gled' one of her children, whose cries they feared might arouse the neighbours. They then fled with 50 gulden (£4 4s). Meanwhile some neighbours who •had heard a noise forced with difficulty an entrance into the house, the door of which had been firmly locked by the deserters. When they entered they found the widow, with the body of her strangled child lying before her on a table, while she herself seemed insane with grief. The police were warned, and the two scomTdrels were arrested.
