AMUSEMENTS

THREE STARS Pathe Gold Rooster plays have always kept a standard, but in “ Hinton 7 s Double, ” the studio turned out what is reviewed as its masterpiece by the American critics. Frederick Warde as the hero is seen in a double role w'hich is a supreme achievement of character acting. It enacts the part of a confiding, goodnatured old clerk who is exactly like a rascally old sharebroker, John Hinton. The latter persuades Joshua to impersonate him and serve the sentence in gaol which he has earned, promising to pay Joshua’s daughter an income to keep her in luxury, fhc false-hearted scoundrel breaks even this bargain, and leaves her to destitution. The rest of the story is full of dramatic surprises, and contains a strong and convincing love story. The photography deserves special remark, and there is a number of remarkable interior scenes, especially of the prisons. Gay life in New York also comes in for its share of illumination. Kathlyn Adams is a charming and beautiful heroine. Double roles as a rule are not popular, but Frederick Warde in “Hinton’s Double” does work that is so remarkable in emphasising the contrast between the two men that ho pourtrays that it might almost bo two separate men, very much alike, who are playing in the drama. On the programme is a Graphic, Keystone, Comedy, Russian Industries, and a Vitagraph comedy.
