FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT
DIRTY WEATHER IN WELLINGTON. MANY NARROW ESCAPES. WELLINGTON, uiis day. A southerly gale yesterday swept the city and raised a sea in the harbour t-hat caused trouble among boating aud yachting parties; in one the result was fatal. Petty officer Frederick Sandalls, of the Naval Service, and seaman Percival Carey left their ship in a small boat, going" AT tie direction of Ngahauranga They were struck by a sudden squall sHu the boat capsized while trying to tack against the gale. The men hung on to the upturned boat for a wSSte, then Sandalls suggested they should swim ashore'. Having drifted near the beach Sandalls struck out, and, aided by a youth named Philip Hunt, who gallauty swam "out, he reached the shore, but succumbed. In the meantime Carey drifted ashore on the boat. A party of yachtsmen in the 16footer Nark, were caught in’a squall while jibing near Karaka Bay, and went on her beam ends. The crew of four were rescued with some difficulty by a party who were returning from a fishing trip. Two othef~boatfng parties, one at Lowery Bay and another off Ward Island, had exciting experiences as a result of being capsized, but all concerned escaped with nothing more than a wetting.
