HALIFAX DISASTER.
4000 DEATHS. OTTAWA, December 8. ' The latest estimate of the dead at Halifax is 2,800. ‘ The Monte Blanc carried 2,800 tons -of most powerful explosives. Debris of shells, and ship plates was found ■within a five miles radius. Towns 150 miles distant rocked) like an eart - quake. Ships fifty miles to sea rocked similarly . NEW YORK, Dec. S. The “ Times’ ” special correspondent states that Halifax was like a living hell. Many who were injured could not be rescued, and perished in the blizzard. To-night the town is in darkness, except for lanterns. Relief trains are stuck in the snow. Tt •is estimated that 1500 bodies have been recovered. WASHINGTON, Dee. 8. Congress has been asked to vote five million dollars for relief of the sufferers, OTTAWA, December 8. Sir R. Borden has placed, the whole resources of the Federal Government at the disposal of the Halifax municipal authorities. The property loss is estimated at six milions sterling. Four thousand dwellings were demolished and twenty thousand people have been rendered destitute. / The death roll at Halifax is now estimated at 4,000 The bodies of 200 sailors and ivorkmen were recovered from the waterfront. Blizzard weather continues.
