Foodstuffs have become so scarce in Belgium that it is quite common to read pages of “small ads” in the local newspapers offering various commodities for the equivalent of a few good meals. One such announcement runs: “In returns for quantity of riee I will give a magnificent piece of cloth, suitable for a man’s suit.’* Doubtless this proved a good “draw,” for the scarcity of wool is almost as marked as that of food.
