SLIGHT GAIN RECORDED. LONDOIN, November 29
Sir Douglas Haig reports considerable reciprocal artillery fire in the neighbourhood of Bourlon Wood, and successful local operations, which slightly advanced our line westward of the wood.
We repulsed raiders in the neighbourhood of Avion and Hollebeke. The enemy artillery was more active in this sector, also east and north-east of Ypres.
BRITISH STRENGTHENING. POSITIONS. LONDON, November 29. British Headquarters reports: We are improving the strength of our new gains, and are giving the enemy no rest. Thcjre is evidence that enemy troops were hurried from Russia, even from Italy ,to try to restore the situation round Cambrai. The w either is favourable, and troops and transport are able to move fairly easily. Sir Douglas Haig reports that aeroplanes are busy in the battle area, and dropped bombs on Courtrai, Roulers, Menin and Thourout railway stations. A French communique states that reciprocal artillery fire is proceeding on the whole front, intense in some sectors. Wireless German official.—There has been hill fighting south-svest o'f Cambrai. The English shelled Cambrai. FIGHTING IN CHAMPAGNE. LONDON, November 29. A French communique states that an attempted enemy raid with large after a violent bombardment north of Mont Cornillet, in Champagne, was repulsed with heavy losses.
