EARLY CLOSING.
BEGINS NEXT SATURDAY. NEW LIQUOR SALE RESTRICTIONS. On Saturday next, December 1, the new hours fixed for the closing of hotel bars under the Sale of Liquor Restriction Act come into force, and will operate till six months after the war ends. From Saturday next, therefore, all hotel bars will open at 9 a.m. and wilt/close at 6 p.m., a restriction of seven hours a day as compared with the existing open period. So ar as closing time is concerned the ►hours prescribed for the closing of shops will be observed, except that on the one hand there will be no closing on the weekly half-holiday, while on the other no late nigTTt is allowed, the closing being uniform throughout the six days of the week.
Not only will hotel bars open three hours later and close four hours ear Her under the new conditions, but all chartered clubs will also have to observe similar hours, so far as the supply of liquor is concerned to all except residential members. Wholesale vendors of liquor are likewise prohibited from selling and delivering liquor outside of the hours when hotel bars are open, save that a concession is granted to enable delivery in time to catch morning trains and boats. It should also be noted that the Act forbids the consumption of liquor after hours in such places as restaurants, oyster saloons, and any other unlicensed premises of the eating-house and refreshment saloon order, Substantial penalties are laid down for both restaurateur and customer in the event of infringements.
