ROLL OF HONOUR.

LANCE-CORPORAL DIMOND. A few days ago the sad news was received in Taihape that Lance -Corporal Dimond had made the supreme sacrifice on the blood-stained fields ini France. This gallant soldier and man was without doubt one of the best allround working athletes in Taihape. He was a man who was respected by his and it goes without saying that when a man is in the employ of one firm for over ten years, he must be a giant in the sphere of labour. We have-only to stand at our doors here in Taihape, and cast our eyes around and see the green grass and smiling homes, arid to think that not many'years' ago the site qlTTaihape was nothing but dense masl Tof native bush, and this is where our gallant soldier, in the old pioneering days, swung his axe and helped carve out homes for the present residents, Lance-Corporal Dimond worked for many years for the late Mr W_ Rathbone, of Hawke’s Bay.. and was a first-class blacksmith. 'He was a man who could do almost anything and do it well, in connection ,with sawmill ■work, and as a sawmill bush hand had few equals. Some few months ago Lance-Corporal Dimond was seriously wounded, but on recovery was soon back in the firing line doing “his bit.” Not only was he a gallant soldier, but he was also a good husband and kind .father. Like all strong, powerful men ? he was extremely fond of little children, and there is no doubt the barbarities and inhumanity of the Germans was a powerful factor in inducing him to enlist in one of the earliest reinforcements. “The country called for men” —and he went, giving up all that most men held dear—his life—in the fight of humanity and justice against barbarity and military despotism. The deceased soldier leaves a widow and two children, to whom the sympathy of all will go out in the loss of a goodwillsband and loving father and Taihape will mourn the loss of a good citizen. —A tribute from his friend, J.T.D.
