PROFITEERING IN WHISKY. Exactly a year ago Sir Thomas Dewar prophesied in "The Weekly Despatch" that whisky would be 10s a bottle The prophecy has come true. In many places this amount is being paid for a bottle of Scotch. Ten shillings is not. a fair price to pay; 7s 6d is the correct price, but whisky in bottle is so scarce in some partsthat the higher amount is willingly offered. The facts about whisky are not at all understood. No whisky is being manufactured to-day in Great Britain. There are whisky distilleries in Canada, but no whisky is being brought over. The country is living on its whisky reserves whioh. are calculated to last five and a half years. Whisky consumption has been cut down by one-half, both for temperance reasons and for economy's sake. Only about five or six distilleries are at work in Scotland, these under Government control, for the production of spirit for high explosives and for the manufacture of yeast. Barley instead of - being used for whisky is being used for bread. The distillery employees, with the exception of these five factories, are either in the Army or if over military age have found employment in munition works, on the land, etc. One firm has 500 employees /in khaki or in blue. While the whisky manufacturers have loyally fallen in with the Government's wishes they would have preferred to have continued manufacturing a small quantity of whisky in order to conserve goodwill. Whisky at 7s Cd a bottle allows~ ft Wehr V:i a- r> fine margin of profit, but when SO per cent, excess profits tr.x plus income tax is deducted they say that there is not so much in it after all. The profiteer, of course, is the retailer, who, on the strength of the present shortage, insists on being paid 10s for a 7s 6d bottle. He is making fully 3s a bottle, or 40 per cent.
