ON LAND AND SEA General von Moltke was anothe: German military leader who was pulled out of the limelight by the Kaiser, and on the naval side he deposed Admiral von Tirpitz, though he is using the fireeater \s submarine policy. On Britain's part Lord Fisher, who created the monitor for attacking along the Belgian coast, and which has not been used, was pulled out of naval leadership and such First Lords as Winston Churchill and Sir Edward Carson have gone into and come out of the Admiralty. There have political changes all over the belligerent areas, from that of Bethmann - Hollweg; and even the mightiest of the mighty have fallen — Nicholas Romanoff and Constantine of Greece. And if the war does not end soon there will be a' general play in the game known as "family coach," with far-reaching, startling and effective results. There are 20 nations at war with the Central Powers, but they are not getting in a 20-to -i power blow and the actual fighters will want to know why pretty soon. The superseding of Cadorna and taking charge of the Italian front by an Allied War Council indicate this very necessary move.

Yesterday's news told us that Count Cadorna has had to retire, like French and Joffre from the the position of Generalissimo of his nation's fighting forces. This is not unexpected, and leads us to ask: What has become of the men broken in this war? It is interesting to recall them. There was General von who threatened to take Paris five minutes after the drive through Belgium, and who actually got within sight of his goal. The man who proved just five minutes too quick for him. General Gallieni, Military Governor of Paris, died pre-maturely through the bitter criticism of French politicians and journalists, That other greater man who stemmed the German west-flowing tide, Field-Marshal Joffre has been superseded by General Nivelle.
