SUCCESSFUL BRITISH RAID. BELGIAN SPY PUNISHED. Received 10.15. LONDON, November 9. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We carried out a successful raid last night eastward of Hargicourt. An official report states that a Belgian was court-martialled, at London, on a charge of coming to England for espionage. The death sentence was comminuted to servitude for life ANOTHER BRITISH VICTORY. •" \ LONDON, November S. Mesopotamia official.—Descending the Tigris on the sth inst.j our troops crossed 1200 yards of open country and attacked a strongly-entrenched position covering Tekrit, Indian, Sikh and rifle regiments captured the first two lines of trenches, inflicting heavy casualties, and repulsed a counter-attack. Cavalry attacked the enemy's right flank. Artillery shelled the Turkish communications to northward and we carried further trenches in the afternoon. British and Indian cavalry charged .over the jtrenches and cut down retreating Turks. The enemy, fleeing in the night time, burned stores and blew up three dumps. We occupied Tekrit on Tuesday and secured much material.
(Tekrit, on the Tigris, is about 100 miles north of Bagdad and a similar distance south of Mosul.) FIGHTING IN FLANDERS. LONDON, November 9. Wireless GerßKn official.— Dixmude was subjected to violent mine-fire. 'Artillery continued active against the Yser sector and Passchendaele. FRESNOY CAPTURED. LONDON, November 9. Sir Douglas Haig reports: The East Yorkshires captured Fresnoy and inflicted many casualties on the garrison attempting to escape the artillery barage. • The enemy's supports, in attempting to advance, suffered heavy losses from machine-gun fire. German official.—Artillery fire -at Sundgan increased to very great violence on both sides of the BhineRhone canal, where] tlhc French attacked in the afternoon, but were thrown back at Ammerschmeier. They captured some of our projecting trenches westward of Heidwiler. where attacks were renewed in the evening. They broke down with heavy losses.
