Lieut. Lionel Dixon, brother of Mr W. Dixon, of Papanui, Taihape, and the first secretary of the Otaihape Meat and Produce Company, Ltd., has been aw r arded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery. Lieut. Dixon was all through the Boer campaign in South Africa; he enlisted some two years ago and was recently wounded at the Battle of Messines.

Admiral von Scheer, the head of the German Admiralty, has given an interview to the Leipzig, Tageblatt, in which he declares: 1 ‘lt is not in the interests of Germany to seek a decisive naval battle, because even if Germany were victorious, it would not follow, in view, of the superiority of the united fleets of the Allies, that we should be justified in hoping that, our mercantile marine could regain its position during the war.”

Some considerable time was spent at the meeting of the Taihape Swimming Club Committee last night on the alteration of the time-table, the ladies’ -hours being the principal bone of contention. A satisfactory decision was ultimately arrived at, and the hope was® expressed by one of the members of the committee, that the Naiades of the district will take full advantage of the new concessions.

Now that the Parliamentary session is over certain arrangements which have long been in contemplation by the Cabinet are to be carried out (says New Zealand Times.) Herdman is to relinquish the Attorney-General’s portfolio for a scat on the Supreme Court Bench in succession to Mr Justice Dbnniston, and it is stated in political circles that this change will certainly come about within the present month.

The committee of the Taranaki. Farmers’ Union met representatives of the frozen meat trade at Hawera on Saturday. The following resolution was carried: That the Government be rev quested to arrange with the Imperial Government for all meat to be purchased “on the hooks,” as all farmers’ co-operative freezing companties arc being very seriously finanically inconvenienced through the long delay in settlements caused by the present system of payment f.0.b., and that it be a recommendation to the Government that all beef should be boned before shipment in order to save shipping space, and also to conserve bones foivuse in New Zealand. The Taihape cattle fair is to be held on Tuesday next, 13th November, under the auspices of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile and Dalgety and Co., Ltd. The entries of cattle already total 2450 head, and most of the principal breeders of the district will be represented in the sale pens. The attention of farmers is particularly drawn to the sale list on page 8.
