THE FRENCH OFFENSIVE. 11,157 PRISONERS TAKEN. EXTENSIVE AIR RAIDING. Received 8.40. NEW YORK, Nov 1. A French communique reports that the offensive between the 23rd • and 27th inst yielded 11,157 prisoners including 237 officers and 180 guns. Between the Meuse and Bezonvaux there is a fairly lively bombardment. Our aeroplanes bombed railway stations at Thionville, Bettemburg, Maz-ili, Longueville, Worppy and Luxemburg. Berlin reports that Herr Hertling refuses to take the Chancellorship because he is unable to secure a majority in the Reichstag. The Amsterdam correspondent of. the "Daily Clironicle" says that Herr Hertling finds the Chancellorship difficulties insuperable. The majority; of. the party representatives have clared themselves against Hertling, because he opposed Alsace-Lorraine being made a Federal State, also because he opposed all kinds of Parliamentary government. It is reported that a plot exists to put forward many impossible candidates in an effort to exhaust the Kaiser's patience and to secure Hollweg's return to office.
