WAR NOTES
BELLEVUE REDOUBT. GALLANT NEW ZEALANDERS Cabling from Flanders to the Sydney >Sun ,on the 16th hist., Mr Keith Murdoch says: The New Zealanders used an aidpost, averaging 100 cases ? within 150 yards outside-the position of the German snipers, who did not fire thereon, but the artillery put in three heavy shells. No damage was done. The Germans used a redoubt on the northern slope, under the red cross. A New Zealand officer on Saturday went out with a towel as a flag. His men followed him \ B'oth sides were sobn collecting the wounded; every available man became stretcher-bear-er, and the battlefield was cleared. The Germans respected our red cross men but began bringing up ammunition on stretchers, whereupon the rules of warfare compelled us to fire. The bearers’ work was wonderful and gallant, the men carrying all day long and night long through the barages of fire. Owing to the mud there were companies of six men to each and it took eight hours to journey three miles; but such countless individual acts were overshadowed by the collective gallantry of those four dauntless waves. Thoughout the Australian force the greatest appreciation is felt for the New Zealanders’ wonderful devotion. '
