ANOTHER DISAGREEMENT
ON TEACHERS’ EXEMPTIONS. WELLINGTON, Oct 30. The second conference between the two Houses over disagreement on the clergy and teachers exemption clause resulted in another deaaiock, representatives of the Lower House reporting just before • the luncheon adjournment, lirat chere had ht-en no agreement. Sir James Allen moved for a third conference, with himself, the Hon. A. M Myers, Sir James Carroll, and Mr C. J. Parr as managers. Mr Jennings, as one of the oldest members of Parliament asked: “How, ’ v long is this farce to continue? Two conferences have been held without agreement on a simple request by the representative Chamber which any honest man would agree with.” 1 Mr Nosworthy; You speak for yourself
Dr. Newman asked if all members could attend the conference.
Mr Speaker ruled in the affirmative. Mr Hindmarsh: We will all go. (Laughter.) Mr Massey: As a matter of fact members don’t attend.
The Premier pointed out that some years ago a member of the House insisted on being present at a conference and the result was that the conference immediately adjourned, and met behind closed doors. He believed no good purpose could be served by the attendance of members, and he suggested that they should not force themselves into the conference. (Hear hear.) f
Sir Joseph W T ard said he wished to deny a rumour circulating that there had been rows and frictions and differences of opinion in Cahient over this bill. Members of Cabinet had discussed the matter, in all its aspects with but one desire, to try and find a solution of a difficult question. There had been different opinions, but absolutely no friction or verbal fighting. The motion for a third conference was adopted.
