ON THE SEA.
MR LLOYD GEORGE’S TRIBUTE. LONDON, Oct 30. In the House of Commons, Mr Floyd George, moving a resolution of thanks to the forces, said the deeds to which the resolution referred had won the admiration and gratitude of every subject of the King. No words were needed to commend the acceptance of the resolution. The Navy was the anchor of the Allied cause, if it lost its hold the hopes of the Aides would be .iad been defeated even a year ago our Linies in France, Mesopotamia, Salonika, and Tgypt would have languished and finally vanished for lack of support of men and material. Since the war broke out the Navy had transported thirteen million men, two million horses, twenty-five million tons of explosives and supplies fiftyone million tons of coal and oil fuel for the fleet, the armies and the needs of the Allies. Out of these thirteen million men, only 3500 had been lost, of whom only 2700 were through the action of the enemy. That was apart from a prodigious quantify of food and other material, totalling 130 .million tons, transported in ships. Referring to the Dominions’ part in the war Mr Lloyd George said they had contributed between 700,000 and 800,000 men and he emphasised how well they had fought.

Mr Lloyd George, in the House of Commons, said there was no ocean . 7 J sea, bay gulf or estuary used for commerce which was not patrolled by the British navy, and the danger of the task was proclaimed by casualties which are proportionately equal to those of the army. Yet through it all the command of the sea was maintained. Turning to the army, he said the expeditionary forces had increased from 160,000 to over 3 000,000 by the end of November, 1914 France was '>'} f 1 1 1': saved, but there was hardly a man left of the old army. . The Upper House of ithe Reichstrath read a third time an additional War, Tax Bill, It includes heavier taxation of securities, new wine and coal taxes and increases on railway fares and income tax. It is estimated that the yield of the increases' will be eight hundred million kroner.
