WEALTH IN WOOL.

That the farmers of Southland and New Zealand generally are experiencing prosperity is a fact beyond question, values for all kinds of produce being exceptional, but only those who arc intimately associated with conditions ruling in 1901 will perhaps remember the low prices with which the growers of wool had to be satisfied. An Invercargill merchant showed a Southland News representative a catalogue for the wool sale held in November, 1901, that was during the South African war period, with the object illustrating values then and now. For the various classes of wool the prices 16 years ago -were as follow, the values for last season being given in parenthesis: Half-bred fleece, 'ild to 4fd (lSd); cross-bred do., 3}d, (15|d) half-bred hogget fleece, 5d to 5-Jd (19d) merino, 6d (10); fire pieces, extra good, 2§d (121 d); second pieces, 2d (lOd); bellies, 2*d (10M); locks Id to 1-Jd (6 J ,d), dead wool, 2d (12d to 13d).
